Call Notes on Pixel is a new built-in feature to record, transcribe, and summarize your phone calls automatically.
It’s designed for anyone who values clarity and follow-through.
In this guide, you’ll learn how it works and how to set it up.
What Are Call Notes on Android?
Call Notes is a newly added feature built into the Phone app on Pixel 9 and newer devices. Once enabled, it kicks in during your phone calls and does transcription of all yor calls.
And here’s what you get after each call:
- A word-for-word transcript of the conversation.
- Automatic speaker separation, so you know who said what.
- A short, clean summary of key points and action items.
Your data is stored locally unless you choose to back it up. And the summaries are only available to you. So your private conversations stay private.
Of course, this only works if you’re on a supported device. Right now, that’s Pixel 9 and newer. Other Android phones don’t have access to it yet.
Call Notes Privacy and Security
When you use Call Notes on your Pixel, all recordings, transcriptions, and summaries are processed directly on your device. This means your call data isn't sent to Google's servers or the cloud.
You have full control over your call data. Call Notes offers options to automatically delete recordings and summaries after 7, 14, or 30 days, or you can choose to delete them manually at any time.
All call data is stored securely on your device. Access to this data is protected by your device's security features, such as screen locks and biometric authentication.
How to Set Up & Use Call Notes

If you’re using a Pixel 9 or newer, the feature is already built into your Phone app.
Let’s walk through the setup first.
Step 1 – Open your Phone app
Tap the icon you use to make calls. This is where the Call Notes feature lives.
Step 2 – Go to Settings
Tap the three dots in the top-right corner. Then select “Settings” from the drop-down menu.
Step 3 – Find and activate Call Notes
Scroll until you see “Call Notes.” Toggle it on. If you don’t see the option yet, no worries. We’ll troubleshoot that later.
Step 4 – Let your phone install what it needs
Your device may need a moment to download some extra components. Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into a charger. Leave your phone for a few minutes—it’ll take care of the rest.
Once setup is complete, you’re ready to use Call Notes on your next phone call.
Using Call Notes During a Call
This part is just as simple. Let’s say you’re calling a candidate or jumping into a client sync.
Step 1 – Start or receive a call as usual
There’s nothing different about how you make the call.
Step 2 – Tap “More” during the call
You’ll see this option on your call screen. Tap it to expand extra features.
Step 3 – Select “Call Notes”
Choose “Call Notes” from the menu. Your phone will play a short audio message: “This call is being recorded.” That message is for privacy and legal reasons.
Step 4 – Let the recording run
From here, you just talk. Your phone will automatically record, transcribe, and summarize the conversation in the background.
Once the call ends, your notes are ready in seconds.
Call Notes Troubleshoot
Here’s how to troubleshoot Call Notes and get back on track.
You don’t see the Call Notes option
This is one of the most common issues. You open your Phone app, go to settings, and... nothing. No “Call Notes” menu in sight.
Start here:
- Check your device
Call Notes only works on Pixel 9 and newer devices. If you’re using an older model, the feature won’t show up—even if your Phone app is up to date. - Update your software
Go to your phone’s settings. Tap “System,” then “System update.” Make sure your Android version is current. Google often pushes updates that quietly enable new features like Call Notes. - Plug in your phone overnight
Still can’t find it? Here’s a trick: plug your phone into a charger, connect to Wi-Fi, and leave it overnight. Some features roll out gradually and only activate when certain conditions are met. This helps the process along. - Restart the Phone app
Close the app completely. Open it again. Sometimes a quick refresh is all it takes. - Restart your device
If all else fails, reboot your phone. This forces your system to reload updates and may trigger the feature to appear.
Call Notes doesn’t start recording
You’ve found the Call Notes option. You’ve turned it on. But during a call, it doesn’t record anything. Here’s what to check.
- The call must last 30 seconds or more
If your call is too short, Call Notes won’t activate. It needs at least half a minute of conversation to record and process. - You didn’t manually start it
Remember, you need to tap “More” during the call, then select “Call Notes.” It doesn’t start automatically. If you forget this step, nothing gets saved. - Audio announcement didn’t play
The app will always play an audio notice—“This call is being recorded.” If you didn’t hear it, the recording probably didn’t begin. Hang up and try again, making sure to follow the exact steps. - Background downloads not complete
During initial setup, your phone may need to download extra components. If you exited too early or lost Wi-Fi, it might not have finished. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and leave the phone idle for a while to complete the process.
You can't find the transcript or summary after the call
The conversation was recorded, but your notes are missing. Here's what to do.
- Go to the “Recents” tab in the Phone app
Call Notes stores everything in the call log. Tap on the call you just finished. You should see a “View Notes” option. - Look for a processing delay
In rare cases, especially with long calls, it may take a few minutes to generate the summary and transcript. Give it a moment, then check again. - Make sure transcription is enabled
Call Notes should automatically transcribe, but double-check your settings. Open the Phone app > Settings > Call Notes and confirm transcription is toggled on.
